The mutant animals are descended from genetically engineered domestic stock, dogs, cats etc. these "Jennies" were imported as service animals to be a low cost supplement to the robotic work force. this practice never caught on on earth due to a very active coalition of animal rights activists and religious groups.

Cyborgs are considered pure strain humans until 85% of the body mass has been replaced.
